Teaching

Units taught

I currently teach the following units (i.e. as Unit Coordinator):

Other Murdoch University units I have coordinated include: ENV423 Environmental Science Research Methods (100%, 2005-2007), ENV104 Australian Environmental Issues (100%, 2001 - 2005); ENV228/428 Environmental Policy and Law (25-50%, 2000 - 2003); and ENV319 Environmental Management (50%, 2001). I give the occasional lecture in a number of other units.

Whilst working at the University of Notre Dame Australia (1996 - 1999) I coordinated a range of units including: ES100 Global Principles of Environmental Science; ES170 Environmental Science: Australian Issues; ES180 Environmental Interpretation and Management; ES105/205 Maritime and Environmental History of the South Coast; ES250 Natural Resources; ES240 Environmental Ethics, Policy and Planning; ES260 Catchments, Corridors & Coast; ES350 Foundations of Environmental Education; and ES331 Environmental Impact Assessment.

Teaching innovations

In 2006 I was awarded a $1,000 Vice Chancellor's Excellence in Enhancing Learning Award and a $10,000 Carrick Institute Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning. Some of my teaching initiatives have been published (see Publications page).

I have recently developed A (Short) Report on Report Writing as a tool to assist student writing skills. [This somewhat supercedes an earlier work entitled An Essay on Essay Writing that I first developed in 1997 and have updated since from time to time].

Research supervision

I have supervised a range of Honours projects (ENV400), Environmental Science Projects (ENV421), Masters projects (ENV500) as well as research PhDs. Most of these have focused on environmental management outcomes or issues relating to behavioural change and outcomes for environmental education programs.

Teaching philosophy

I seek to empower my students to be critical and independent learners. I encourage independent learning through having highly organised unit guides and materials supported with online resources. I use a variety of assessment methods throughout my units. I enjoy teaching and enjoy learning about environmental management issues and I seek to impart this enthusiasm to my undergraduate and research students alike.
