Conferences

Conferences are important events in professional life. On this page, I will store information and links to forthcoming and recent conferences of interest to me and others with an interest in mathematics education.

Eleventh International Congress on Mathematics Education(ICME-11)
The Eleventh International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME-11) will be held in Monterrey, Mexico, on July 6-13, 2008. This is the major international gathering of mathematics education, held every four years. The congress will have between 3000 and 4000 professionals from 100 countries; delagets will include researchers, educators and teachers. The congress aims to show what is happening in mathematics education worldwide, in terms of research as well as teaching practices; discuss the problems of mathematics education around the world, and learn about recent advances in mathematics as a discipline.

Asian Technology Conference on Mathematics (ATCM)
This annual conference provides a forum for those interested in the place of technology in mathematics and in mathematics education, particularly in the South East and East Asian regions. Previous conferences have been held in Singapore; Penang; Tsukuba City, Japan; Guangzhou, China; Chiang Mai, Thailand; Melbourne; Melaka; Hsin-Chu, Taiwan; Singapore; South Korea; Hong Kong; and Taipei. The next conference will be held in Bangkok, Thailand in December 2008. I am a member of the International Program Committee for this conference and a regular presenter.

Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT)
This biennial conference is the premier event of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT) and offers a wide range of professional activities for members and others. The most recent conferences were held in Sydney (2005) and Hobart (2007). The next conference will be in Fremantle in July 2009.

The Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV)
The MAV holds a large annual conference early in December, attended by many Victorian teachers and others from outside Victoria. The next conference will be in Melbourne in December 2004 with the theme of Towards Excellence in Mathematics. Conference Proceedings are usually available for purchase after the conference. See the MAV website for details.

Mathematical Association of Western Australia (MAWA)
This annual conference for teachers of mathematics is widely regarded as amongst the best in Australia, offering a wide variety of professional development workshops and activities for primary and secondary mathematics Members and other teachers. The MAWA conference has been held for the past several years in Bunbury, a coastal city south of Perth, so that the majority of participants are resident at the conference. Detailed information about this and other MAWA professional development activities are available from the MAWA website.

Mathematical Association of New South Wales (MANSW)
MANSW is the major organisation for mathematics teachers in New South Wales, and holds an annual conference. The annual conference is usually held in September. In 2004, the conference was at Mudgee. I was invited to give a keynote presentation to the Leura conference in 2001, in the Blue Mountains just west of Sydney. My keynote presentation is available here for viewing.

The Mathematical Association of South Australia (MASA)
MASA conference in 2004 was held in Adelaide in April 2004 with the theme of Juggling with Mathematics. I was a keynote speaker at this conference; my presentation is available for downloading as a pdf of size 260K.

International Conference on the Teaching of Mathematics (Crete)
Following the very successful 1st International Conference on the Teaching of Mathematics (Samos, Greece, July 1998), the 2nd International Conference addressed new ways of teaching undergraduate mathematics. The conference was held on Crete, Greece, on July 1-6, 2002. It provided a unique forum bringing together faculty from countries with varied educational systems who are committed to introducing innovative teaching methods and new pedagogies.

SCE 2006 - International Seminar on Symbolic Computation in Education (SCE 2006)
This informal seminar provided a forum for foreign and Chinese researchers, educators, and other experts actively involved or interested in developing, using, and practicing methods and software tools of symbolic computation for education to exchange ideas and views, to discuss teaching philosophy and pedagogical techniques, to present research and experiments, and to build up contacts for future cooperation. The scientific program of the seminar will feature invited talks and short presentations. I gave one of the invited talks. The seminar was in Beijing, China, April 12-14, 2006

New Zealand Association of Mathematics Teachers (NZAMT)
The NZAMT is the major mathematics teaching body in New Zealand. The ninth biennial conference will be held in Christchurch, New Zealand in September of 2005, with the theme of 'Thinking outside the square'.

The seventh biennial conference was held in Wellington, New Zealand in July of 2001, with the theme of 'A Maths Odyssey'. I was invited as a mini-plenary speaker and also conducted some workshops for delegates. My plenary presentation is available here for viewing.

International Mathematics Conference
A conference in Egypt in 1999 was the first of several planned conferences over the next few years. These are organised by the Mathematics into the Twenty-First Century group. The next conferences were in Palm Cove, North Queensland; Sicily; Brno, Czech Republic and Poland. There are tentative plans for a conference in 2005 in South-east Asia; to get more information about the conference, send an email to Alan Rogerson, a key member of the International Programme Committee.

Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA)
MERGA holds an annual conference around July. In 2004, the MERGA 27 conference was in Townsville, while MERGA 28 will be held in Melbourne. The focus of the conferences are research in mathematics education, there are many interesting opportunities there also for teachers.

Tenth International Congress on Mathematics Education (ICME-10)
The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) organises an ICME every four years. The Executive Committee of ICMI accepted an invitation received from the Danish ICMI Committee to hold the 10th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME-10) in Copenhagen, Denmark, in July, 2004. This invitation was presented on behalf of the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, which agreed to support the holding of ICME-10 in Copenhagen and to combine efforts in providing the Congress with a distinctive Nordic flavor. Visit the website for more details.

Ninth International Congress on Mathematics Education (ICME-9)
The previous ICME congress was in Makuhari, Japan from July 31 to August 6, 2000. (Makuhari is in Tokyo, about half way between the downtown area and Narita International Airport - about 40 km from central Tokyo.) Together with Professor Rolf Biehler of Germany, I was involved in the congress as a Co-Chief Organiser of Working Group 11, the focus of which was technology in mathematics education, specifically: Computers, calculators and IT media.

Eighth International Congress on Mathematics Education (ICME-8)
The previous ICME was in Seville, Spain in 1996. My main involvement was in Topic Group 18, in which Marian Kemp, Jen Bradley and myself presented a paper on assessment with graphics calculators. The complete set of conference papers from this part of ICME-8 is available on the web.

Time 2000 (TIME)
This International Conference on Technology in Mathematics Education was held in Auckland, New Zealand during World Mathematics Year 2000 on 11-14th December 2000, hosted by The University of Auckland and Auckland Institute of Technology. The Conference focussed upon the uses of technology in, but not limited to, problem solving, teaching, assessment, distance education, research and learning. My invited plenary address to this conference is available on my publications page.

International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME)
There is an annual PME conference, at which many research papers are presented and for which the Proceedings are usually available for purchase. The 2005 conference is in July in Melbourne

Finding conference information
The AAMT maintains an up to date list of relevant conferences of interest to mathematics teachers. Links to various mathematics education conferences are also provided at Acadia University. The NCTM Conferences link is useful if you are near the USA. The ICMI Bulletins have a section concerned with upcoming conferences. PME also keep a register of forthcoming conferences, including of course PME's own conference. See also Bernhard Kutzler's searchable 'Events' listings.
